HC Deb 27 November 1974 vol 882 c190W
Mr. Hurd

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection which main foods are now cheaper in the United Kingdom as a result of British membership of the EEC.

Mr. Maclennan

The further we get from the date of United Kingdom entry into the EEC, the harder it is to determine what food prices would have been if we had not joined. But, taking into account EEC-financed subsidies, cereals, sugar, beef—for certain categories of consumer—and probably butter prices are, or shortly will be, benefiting from United Kingdom membership.
