HC Deb 27 November 1974 vol 882 cc168-9W
Mr. Stainton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to what extent farm rents are uncontrolled compared with commercial properties; and why.

Mr. Strang

As from 5th November 1973 agricultural landlords are permitted to collect half the rent increase agreed between the parties or determined by arbitration. Rent increases for new improvements may be collected in full.

As to commercial rents, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment gave to the hon. Member for Crosby (Mr. Page) on 13th November. —[Vol. 881, c. 125-6.]

The agricultural rent system is on a different basis from commercial rents. Agricultural landlords have substantial statutory obligations for the maintenance, repair and insurance of fixed equipment on farms.
