HC Deb 26 November 1974 vol 882 c126W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Industry (1) what steps he proposes to take to improve the economic prospects of North Staffordshire;

(2) what recommendations he has received about the economic future of North Staffordshire; and what replies he has sent;

(3) if he will now visit North Staffordshire to assess the economic problems and discuss with local representatives the best means of modernising its industrial structure.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

I am aware of some concern in North Staffordshire about economic prospects of the area but the shortage of labour is a deterrent to new developments. My hon. Friend will, however, be pleased to know that employment prospects in the pottery industry are now better than they have been for some time. I have at Present no plans for a visit.
