HC Deb 26 November 1974 vol 882 cc102-3W
Mr. Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many unemployed people have been registered at employment exchanges in Cambridgeshire monthly since June 1974; of these how many were made redundant from brickfields; and what steps have been taken to place such persons in other employment.

Mr. John Fraser

The number of people registered as unemployed in employment offices in Cambridgeshire in each month since June 1974 is as follows:

Date of count Number registered as unemployed
10th June 1974 2,830
8th July 1974 2,849
12th August 1974 3,363
9th September 1974 3,641
14th October 1974 3,167
11th November 1974 3,200

On 11th November 1974, 48 of those registered as unemployed had been last employed in brickmaking. I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that these workers have been seen by officials of the Employment Service Agency and advised on opportunities for alternative employment and for training and retraining. Efforts to assist them will continue.
