HC Deb 22 November 1974 vol 881 cc564-5W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will reconsider his decision to give English precedence over Welsh on road traffic signs in Wales.

Mr. John Morris

No, Sir. My decision was based on road safety considerations and these have not changed. I earnestly commend those who dislike this decision to study with great care the comparative reading time figures in the Transport and Road Research Laboratory report. These leave me in no doubt as to the seriousness of the risk to life and limb which a contrary decision would have involved.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if lie will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT the names of those persons who have made representations to him, since the commencement of the present Parliament, in favour of placing the Welsh language above the English language on road traffic signs in Wales.

Mr. John Morris

I have received three letters. I do not think it would be proper to name individuals.
