HC Deb 22 November 1974 vol 881 c536W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is his Department's estimate of the number of prefabricated dwellings in use by local authorities in England;

(2) if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT, in the most convenient form, information relating to the age of prefabricated dwellings currently in use.

Mr. Kaufman

I presume both Questions refer to the prefabricated bungalows provided under the Housing (Temporary Accommodation) Act, 1944. Under the Housing Finance Act 1972 local authorities have sole responsibility for these dwellings and I no longer keep comprehensive records of the total still in use. However, from local authority returns of the numbers demolished, it appears that about 21,000 were still in use in England at 31st March 1974. Information relating to the age of these dwellings is not available.
