§ Mr. Ralph Howellasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will publish a table showing (a) the total wage bill in the coal mining industry, (b) the total amount of coal raised and (c) average labour costs per 1,000 tons of coal raised—at both constant and current prices—for each year since 1970 and for the second and third quarter of 1974.

§ Mr. VarleyThe annual salaries of the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and other members of the National Coal Board, together with the dates of expiry of their appointments, are published in the annual White Paper on Public Boards. Since the 535W last publication in April 1974 (Cmnd. 5609), the salaries of all except the part-time members have been increased by £350 p.a. and by threshold payments; and Mr. Wellings has been reappointed until 4th July 1977. Members do not have contracts of service but their terms of appointment are governed by the Coal Industry Nationalisation (National Coal Board) Regulations 1946 (SR&O 1946 No. 1094).
