§ Mr. Luardasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will list in the 517W OFFICIAL REPORT all national organisations representing handicapped people who, in their comments on the report by Baroness Sharp into the mobility needs of the handicapped, requested the main provision of an adapted car or mobilitiy grant as an alternative to a specialised vehicle, in accordance with her recommendations.
§ Mr. Alfred MorrisThe list of organisations which requested the provision of a car or of a mobility grant is as follows:
- The Joint Committee on Mobility for the Disabled.
- The Royal Air Forces' Asociation.
- The British Limbless Ex-Servicemens' Association.
- The Disabled Living Foundation.
- The British Council for Rehabilitation of the Disabled.
- The Spinal Injuries Association.
- The Disabled Drivers' Association.
- The Multiple Sclerosis Society.
- The British Association of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation.
- The British Polio Fellowship.
- The Disabled Drivers' Action Group.
- The Haemophilia Society.
- The National Fund for Research into Crippling Diseases.
- The Disabled Drivers' Motor Club Ltd.
Most of these organisations argued a continuing need for the three-wheeler for some disabled people; only the last four favoured early and complete replacement by adapted cars. As my hon. Friend knows, the comments made to us by the national organisations representing handicapped people were a major consideration in the formulation of the scheme announced on 13th September 1974.
