HC Deb 21 November 1974 vol 881 c514W
Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the cost in a full year of introducing the proposed new age allowance if the upper limit were set at £2,000 instead of £3,000.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

On the same basis as the figure given in the Supplementary Financial Statement and Budget Report for 1974–75, the estimated full year cost with a £2,000 income limit is about £205 million. But there would have been very serious operational difficulties with a £2,000 upper limit.
