HC Deb 21 November 1974 vol 881 c463W
7. Sir D. Walker-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what evidence he has received about the extent of hooliganism on public transport; and what action he proposes to take.

20. Mr. Mather

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any proposals for dealing with assaults by hooligans, in particular in relation to public transport.

Dr. Summerskill

We have received a number of representations, mainly from within the transport industry, about hooliganism on public transport, and my right hon. Friend has had discussions about this problem with the unions principally concerned and with London Transport. Some constructive suggestions have been made, particularly with regard to joint action by transport authorities and the police, and we have taken steps to encourage co-operation on these lines.

41. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that London Transport staff have been violently assaulted and services disrupted by juvenile and other miscreants; and what counter-measures have been taken by the Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I am well aware of this problem, and discussed it on 19th November with the Chairman and senior officers of London Transport, who expressed their appreciation of the assistance received from the Metropolitan Police in countering it. The Commissioner pays special attention to the problem, within the limits of his available resources, and maintains close liaison for this purpose with bus garages, and with the British Transport police in regard to the Underground.
