HC Deb 21 November 1974 vol 881 c474W
58. Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the shortfall in the present provision of approved school, detention centre and borstal places, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

The former approved schools now form part of the system of local authority and other community homes for which ministerial responsibility rests with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Wales. There is at present no general shortage of places in senior detention centres and borstals in England and Wales. Recent experience suggests that there is a considerable shortfall of places in junior detention centres.
