§ Mr. Ashleyasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give an estimate of the number of people receiving capital sums as compensation for injuries as a result of road accidents in the following categories, together with the average payment and total payment in each category: (i) below £1,000, (ii) £1,000–£5,000, (iii) £5,000–£10,000; (iv) £10,000–£20,000 and (v) £20,000 and over.
§ Mr. CarmichaelI regret that I have no means of making such an estimate. The great majority of such payments which arise from third party claims are settled in negotiation between the claimants and motor insurers.
