HC Deb 20 November 1974 vol 881 c458W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give an estimate of the number of people receiving capital sums as compensation for injuries as a result of road accidents in the following categories, together with the average payment and total payment in each category: (i) below £1,000, (ii) £1,000–£5,000, (iii) £5,000–£10,000; (iv) £10,000–£20,000 and (v) £20,000 and over.

Mr. Carmichael

I regret that I have no means of making such an estimate. The great majority of such payments which arise from third party claims are settled in negotiation between the claimants and motor insurers.
