asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if the value of the £ sterling was 100 on 1st April 1970, what was the value of the £ sterling 1st October 1974 and 1st November 1974; and what was the rise in the cost of living between 1st April 1970, and 1st October 1974 and 1st November 1974.

Taking the internal purchasing power of the £ as 100p in April 1970, its value is estimated to have been 65½p in September 1974 and 64p in October 1974, the latest date available. Over the same periods, the General Index of Retail Prices increased by 53 per cent. and 56 per cent. respectively.
