Mr. Ted Fletcherasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) whether he will take steps through the International Security Council, established under Article 5 of the Treaty of Brunei, or otherwise, to intervene in the case of Mr. Shabuddin Bin Haji Damit, who has been a political prisoner for seven years without charge or 384W trial, and other political detainees, since the imprisonment without trial of these detainees are themselves a threat to the internal security of the country;
(2) whether he will take steps through the International Security Council, established under Article 5 of the Treaty of Brunei, or otherwise, to intervene in the case of Mr. Abul Ghani Bin Burut and other political prisoners, held without trial by the Brunei Government, since the detainees are themselves a threat to the internal security of the country.
§ Mr. EnnalsThe Sultan of Brunei announced on 7th September that the detainees would not be held indefinitely and that their cases would be reviewed. He further announced on 2nd November that three detainees had been released and that others would be released in due course.
