HC Deb 18 November 1974 vol 881 cc310-1W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, in view of his statement that sugar supplies to shops are now above those of last year, he will investigate the reasons for the difficulty in obtaining regular and sufficient supplies of sugar in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring, Markyate, Chipperfield and Kings Langley.

Mr. Strang

There is no inconsistency in total national supplies of packaged sugar being at levels comparable to those a year earlier while the supply to particular shops in particular towns may show variations from the normal position. Detailed investigations which have already been made have shown that this situation results from a series of commercial transactions in which intervention is difficult. We are, however, inviting all sections of the trade to discuss how distribution can be made as fairly as possible.
