HC Deb 18 November 1974 vol 881 c310W
Mr. Cormack

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of the need to cut public expenditure, he will cancel the proposals for the M54 linking Telford and the M6, and instead take steps to improve the A5 between Gailey and the Shropshire border, in particular by providing a bypass for the village of Weston-under-Lizard.

Mr. Mulley

The maximum improvement of existing roads would not provide an adequate alternative to the M54 motorway as a connection between Telford New Town and the national motorway network. The construction of the M54 is expected to result in a significant reduction in the volume of traffic on the A5 between Gailey and Weston-under-Lizard.
