HC Deb 18 November 1974 vol 881 cc313-4W
Mr. Hooson

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the present pig population of the United Kingdom; and how this figure compares with the population at the same time last year.

Mr. Bishop

The results of the September 1974 livestock inquiry are not yet available. At the sample inquiry in August 1974 the total number of pigs in the United Kingdom was 8,354,000. The latest data which can be compared with data 12 months before is that from the June census, which showed a 3½ per cent. fall in United Kingdom pig numbers compared to June 1973.
