§ Mr. Gowasked the Secretary of State for the Environment to what temperature, measured in degree fahrenheit, Government offices are heated during the winter months, and what would be the estimated saving in fuel costs if that temperature were reduced by 5 per cent. in a full year assuming normal weather conditions.
§ Mr. KaufmanGovernment offices are normally heated to about 65 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter months. A reduction of two or three degrees on this temperature would produce a saving of over £500,000 on fuel costs, but would result in unacceptable working conditions. I am already taking steps to eliminate waste due to excessive temperatures, inefficient heating control systems, and heating during unoccupied periods.
