HC Deb 18 November 1974 vol 881 c325W
Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking to ensure the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 353 of 20th July 1974.

Mr. Hattersley

In support of United Nations Security Council Resolution 353, subsequent Security Council resolutions and General Assembly Resolution 3212, Her Majesty's Government are continuing to exert every effort to encourage the parties involved in the Cyprus dispute to reach a viable settlement.

Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement on Great Britain's role under the Treaty of Guarantee of 1960 in relation to the Turkish military intervention in Cyprus contravening the said treaty.

Mr. Hattersley

Under the Treaty of Guarantee, 1960, Her Majesty's Government undertook to consult together with Greece and Turkey in the event of a breach of the provisions of the Treaty. Since the coup in Cyprus on 15th July, Her Majesty's Government have engaged in intensive consultations with Greece and Turkey, both at the Geneva talks and bilaterally.
