HC Deb 15 November 1974 vol 881 cc268-9W
Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will now reply to the letter handed to his Department on 15th October by a picket of 40 journalists from the National Union of Journalists protesting about police harassment on Press photographers at the National Front demonstration on 7th September; and if he will make a statement on the matters raised in the letter.

Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has yet replied to the letter sent to him by the Action Committee for the Defence of Journalists on 15th October 1974, which concerned events at the National Front demonstration on 7th September; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Summerskill

A reply was sent on 14th November. The letter complained, among other things, that Press photographers were intimidated by the police, in particular at a demonstration on 7th September. The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis tells us that one photographer has complained about the action of the police on that occasion, and that the complaint is being investigated in accordance with Section 49 of the Police Act 1964.
