HC Deb 14 November 1974 vol 881 c228W
Mr. Stanley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish the number of those employed in each of the nationalised industries at their respective vesting dates and the number employed at the latest available date.

Mr. Booth

Department of Employment statistics are analysed according to industrial classification and not according to ownership.

The information requested can only be supplied by the organisations concerned, which would also be aware of any qualifications that needed to be made to the figures, and of major changes affecting employment. However, the following examples of changes have been obtained:

National Coal Board (vesting day 1st January 1947)
Total Industrial and non-industrial employees, excluding holding companies.
September 1948 769,570
September 1973 305,042
British Steel Corporation (vesting day 28th July 1967)
Number employed
July 1967 257,000
September 1974 222,000
