HL Deb 14 November 1974 vol 354 c946WA
LORD HYLTON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will ensure that the experience of Zetland County Council in providing factory-made wooden houses, and of the Medway District of Kent in building traditional bungalows, that can subsequently be enlarged, is brought to the attention of local authorities, housing associations and private builders.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT (BARONESS BIRK)

The Government are naturally anxious to encourage methods of building which will enable suitable accommodation to be provided quickly and cheaply whether for owner-occupation or for renting from local authorities or housing associations. In this connection my right honourable friend the Secretary of State for the Environment announced on October 30 that he has asked his Department to conduct an urgent review of possible ways of getting more houses built more quickly and more cheaply. The review will take into account the kinds of accommodation involved in the schemes to which the noble Lord has drawn attention. The question of further advice will be considered in the light of the outcome of the review.
