HC Deb 14 November 1974 vol 881 cc240-1W
Mr. McElhone

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many geriatric units have been approved by his office since 1970; what is the number of beds provided by these units; and what was the total cost of building these units.

Mr. William Ross

Between 1st January 1970 and 31st March 1974, 15 hospital schemes providing 853 geriatric beds were completed at a cost of £4.7 million. At 31st March 1974, 12 hospital schemes providing 1,252 geriatric and psychogeriatric beds were in progress at an estimated cost of £6 million. These figures exclude geriatric beds provided within larger schemes and schemes costing less than £50,000. The number of beds provided includes replacement as well as additional beds. Only schemes costing over £250.000 required specific departmental approval.
