HC Deb 14 November 1974 vol 881 cc200-1W
Mr. Gould

asked the Minister of Agriculture. Fisheries and Food whether he will consider lifting the ban on cyclamates and encourage the use of other substitutes for sugar.

Mr. Strang

The renewed use of cyclamates would not be justified at present. However, my scientists are following the progress of research in several countries, which is providing useful additional information. Other important studies have still to be completed. If any parties consider that adequate evidence on the safety in use of cyclamates has become available I would at once submit such evidence to my expert committees to evaluate the evidence and to advise me on whether the ban should be lifted. The use of saccharin is already permitted in food. My expert committees have recently been asked to evaluate another artificial sweetener—Aspartame.
