asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what would be the cost of abolishing the means-tested contribution towards the grants of married postgraduate students which at present has to be made by their spouses.

Mr. Prentice

The cost for postgraduate studentships is estimated at about about £100,000 in the current academic year.
