asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what would be the estimated cost of issuing free school meals to all pupils.

Mr. Armstrong

The cost of providing free school meals for all pupils at maintained schools in England and Wales would be approximately £450 million per annum. This assumes that all pupils in attendance would take the meal.
