asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps are being taken by his Department to encourage greater co-ordination of effort by adjacent local authorities in the housing and rehousing of the homeless, having special regard to the reorganisation of local government.

Mr. Freeson

My Department's circular 18/74, issued jointly with the Department of Health and Social Security and the Welsh Office, stressed the need for local authorities at both tiers of the new local government structure to work together in a corporate response to homelessness. The Departments are keeping in touch with the situation in sensitive areas such my hon. Friend's constituency.
