Mr. Lawrence

asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many policy advisers to the Government appointed from outside the Civil Service are currently employed at public expense; and how many are in his private policy unit.

Twenty-seven advisers have been or are in the process of being appointed to serve at public expense. Six of these are in the policy unit at No. 10.

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what is the cost to the taxpayer per annum of (a) his private policy unit, and (b) all policy advisers appointed from outside the Civil Service. (Mr. Mills) and others on 7th November. Moreover, the increases in the hill sheep subsidies which my right hon. Friend announced on 3rd October will be worth some £9 million to hill sheep farmers in Scotland and other hill areas of the United Kingdom.
