HC Deb 13 November 1974 vol 881 c176W
Mr. Stanbrook

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether she will review the arrangements whereby doctors who have qualified at institutions overseas are permitted to practise in Great Britain in the National Health Service without further investigation into the adequacy of their qualifications.

Dr. Owen

The General Medical Council, which is statutorily responsible, is reviewing the present arrangements in consultation with the health Departments and the profession and I hope to make a statement shortly. Longer-term arangements, which may involve legislation, are under consideration by the Merrison Committee of Inquiry into the Regulation of the Medical Profession which is expected to report about the end of the year.
