HC Deb 12 November 1974 vol 881 cc75-6W
Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the percentage increase in wages and salaries in Scotland in 1973; and what was the corresponding increase for the United Kingdom as a whole.

Mr. Booth

The average gross weekly earnings of full-time men, aged 21 and over, and full-time women, aged 18 or over, whose pay for the New Earnings Survey reference period in April 1974 was not affected by absence were higher than the corresponding April 1973 averages by the following percentages:

Scotland Great Britain
Full-time men (aged 21 and over):
Manual 15.5 14.4
Non-manual 10.5 13.1
All 13.7 13.9
Full-time women (aged 18 and over):
Manual 19.9 19.4
Non-manual 14.0 15.8
All 16.0 16.8

The estimates are subject to sampling error. They are based on 1974 survey results being published later this month in the Department's Gazette. Corresponding United Kingdom estimates are not yet available.

Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the percentage increases in income from employment in Scotland and in the United Kingdom, respectively, in the years 1972 and 1973.

Mr. Booth

I understand from my right hon. Friends the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Secretary of State for Scotland that the percentage increases in income from employment, on national accounts definitions, were:

1971 to 1972 1972 to 1973*
Scotland 12.5 16.9
United Kingdom 12.0 14.4
* Based on provisional 1973 estimate.
