§ Mr. Lawrenceasked the Secretary of State for Defence what special provision is made to ensure that generous compensation is provided for the family of a member of the Armed Services who is killed or seriously injured as a result of terrorist activities.
§ Mr. Robert C. BrownIn addition to any disablement or other benefits, or war widow's pension, paid by the Department of the Health and Social Security, the Armed Forces Pension Scheme provides94W benefits for a Service man or his family if his disablement or death is attributable to service, whether due to terrorist activities or other causes.
The amounts payable are related to rank and, for injury, to the degree of disability. As an example, the widow, with two children, of a private who is attributably killed would receive a lump sum payment of £2,598 and a pension of £1,229 a year under the Armed Forces Pension Scheme, after first being issued with her late husband's full pay for 13 weeks. She would also receive a war widow's pension from the Department of Health and Social Security.
Death or disablement resulting from terrorist activities could also be the subject of a claim for criminal injuries compensation, and official assistance and advice is given in the pursuit of such a claim.
