HC Deb 12 November 1974 vol 881 c68W
Mr. Winterton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total sum remitted in tax relief on mortgage interest payments for house purchase to owner-occupiers in the latest period of 12 months; and what was the number of households which benefited.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

For 1973–74 some 5¼ million people qualified for tax relief on mortgage interest payments at a cost of about £500 million.
