Mr. Wigley

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will propose the setting up of a low-interest loan fund, administered through normal banking channels, to assist farmers hit financially by the difficulties of the beef industry.

Mr. Bishop

My right hon. Friend has announced that he will be discussing with his European colleagues at the beginning of next week means of providing further support for the beef market. My right hon. Friend will make a further announcement after those discussions.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Minister of Agiculture, Fisheries and Food if he will institute a system of guarantees for the bank overdrafts of farmers put in financial jeopardy by the present difficulties of the beef industry.

Mr. Bishop

Provision already exists under the Agricultural Credit Corporation arrangements for assistance to farmers with the provision of guarantees for the obtaining of bank loans.
