HC Deb 12 November 1974 vol 881 cc95-6W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total number of bricks used in the construction of the average-sized new house built in England and Wales.

Mr. Kaufman

An average-sized detached house of conventional construction probably requires about 10,000 to 12,000 bricks; a terrace or semi-detached house requires somewhat less.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what he estimates would be the scale of a national building programme necessary to absorb the present stock of bricks lying in manufacturers' yards; and in what time schedule he estimates the stocks would be utilised.

Mr. Freeson

As bricks are used to varying extents in different forms of construction it is not possible to estimate the programme needed to absorb the present brick stocks. Stocks at the end of September 1974 represented approximately two months' requirements at current levels of demand.
