§ Mrs. Bainasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what he estimates to be the total saving to local education authorities in non-payment of teachers' salaries due to staff shortages in Scotland; and if he will list totals separately for each local authority.
§ Mr. William RossI expect the results of the autumn census to show that in the primary school sector practically all education authorities have staff in excess of the numbers needed for the minimum staff complements prescribed in 1972. There are at present no nationally recommended staffing standards for secondary schools against which an authority's secondary school teaching force might be measured.
§ Mrs. Bainasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will recommend the standardisation of the regulations regarding paid leave of absence to Scottish teachers who wish to undertake further study.
