HC Deb 11 November 1974 vol 881 cc43-4W
Mr. Weetch

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many complaints he has received concerning the safety aspect of sponsored walks in the last six months.

Mr. Mulley

None.

Mr. Weetch

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if, in view of the absence of regulations governing sponsored charity walks, he will introduce legislation to regulate them;

(2) if he remains satisfied with his Department's leaflet of advice on safety on sponsored walks.

Mr. Mulley

It is unwise to hold organised walks on roads used by motor traffic. But this is a matter where advice rather than legislation seems appropriate, since I do not wish to limit pedestrian access to ordinary highways, and it would be difficult to make regulations covering the many kinds of sponsored walks. The leaflet "Safety and Sponsored Walks", published in 1971, offers sound advice. I shall, however, be glad to consider any suggestions my hon. Friend wishes to make.
