HC Deb 11 November 1974 vol 881 cc34-5W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make it his policy to sanction the upgrading of older school premises in Scotland so as to give to staff and pupils the standards set by the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act 1963.

Mr. William Ross

Appropriate environmental standards for schools generally are prescribed in the School Premises (General Requirements and Standards) (Scotland) Regulations 1967 and 1973, and others are recommended in design guidance issued by the Scottish Education Department. Together these standards give education authorities suitable guidelines for school improvement works in their programmes. They will, however, continue to be open to review, particularly in the light of recommendations that are made by the commission set up under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
