HC Deb 11 November 1974 vol 881 c24W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will set up a committee to inquire into the workings of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876; and if he is satisfied that this Act needs no amendment.

Dr. Summerskill

We do not think that a further study of the working of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 is warranted. The Government are not contemplating introducing legislation on this subject at present.

Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will receive a deputation from animal organisations to discuss the workings of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876.

Dr. Summerskill

If my hon. Friend will write to me with details of the matters for discussion, I shall be glad to consider such a meeting.
