HC Deb 07 November 1974 vol 880 cc197-8W
49. Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will now take steps to prevent the endangering of lives and the destruction of property caused by continual flooding at the Sunk Road, Dunloy, County Antrim.

Mr. Orme

I am aware of the longstanding problem of land drainage in this area. The Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture has already planned a major drainage improvement scheme for the Upper Main River, which will permit proper drainage, and is negotiating with land and property owners to enable the scheme to proceed. Drainage engineering officials of the Department have carefully considered whether measures on the drainage aspect might be taken to provide some temporary relief but have concluded that this would not be possible. However, I am informed that the roads service of the Department of the Environment will shortly begin works to raise the level of the road.
