HC Deb 06 November 1974 vol 880 cc151-2W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received about an interim salary award to teachers; and what replies he has sent.

Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will propose an immediate interim award of 10 per cent. increase to all Scottish teachers.

Mr. William Ross

I have received representations from some Members of Parliament, parents and teachers pressing for an interim salary award to be made to teachers. In the cases where a reply was appropriate I have explained that in a response to a claim by the teachers' side of the Scottish Teachers Salaries Committee for an immediate 10 per cent. interim increase the Management Side on 30th October agreed in principle to the making of an interim payment when the Houghton Committee's report is available, the amount to be determined then with retrospection to 24th May.
