HC Deb 06 November 1974 vol 880 cc154-5W
Mr. Adam Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what action he will take on rents following the end of the present freeze.

Mr. William Ross

I made an order on 29th August 1974 extending the standstill on public sector rents to 15th May 1975. This will relieve existing local authorities from the requirement to make rent increases at a time when local government is being reorganised and will hold the position pending the coming into operation of the new arrangements to be embodied in the Rents and Subsidies Bill which is to be introduced shortly.

I intend to extend the standstill also in the private sector until effect can be given to the restrictions on rent increases which will be provided for in the new legislation. The necessary order will be laid before Parliament shortly.
