HC Deb 06 November 1974 vol 880 cc157-8W
Mr. Roderick

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the gain to the Exchequer of withdrawing child tax allowances, and what level of family allowance this would permit if the money were used for this purpose including the first child in each family.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

The latest estimate of the cost to the Exchequer of child tax allowances for 1974–75 is about £1,220 million. This amount would finance an increase of family allowances to about £1.90 per week assuming that the allowance was not taxable and was extended to the first child and to children aged 19 and over in full-time education.
