HC Deb 06 November 1974 vol 880 c161W
Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied that beef producers have been assured a reasonable return as he indicated would be the case with the introduction of his premia on 17th July.

Mr. Bishop

The Beef Premium Scheme provided the incentives for orderly marketing of clean cattle with a view to maintaining total returns to producers at a reasonable level over a period. Excessive marketings have so far negated the objective of the scheme and prices have been further depressed by the generally lower than usual quality of animals. With a more normal flow of marketings and steeply increasing rates of premium returns should improve over the next few months.
