HC Deb 05 November 1974 vol 880 cc137-8W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what long-term plans are being worked out for the agricultural rehabilitation of the Sahel region of West Africa; and what British contribution to the solution of this problem is envisaged over the next two years.

Mrs. Hart

The seven Governments in the region established an intergovernmental committee in 1974 to co-ordinate medium and long-term measures to alleviate the drought situation. The committee has drawn up a programme for the agricultural rehabilitation of the region which has been sent to the United Nations agencies, the EEC and bilateral donors. The Special Sahelian Office set up by the United Nations Secretary-General is assisting with the appraisal of the programme.

Her Majesty's Government are involved in this international action and attach great importance to its effective co-ordination. We shall continue to play our part in the rehabilitation of these countries, through multilateral and bilateral aid.
