HC Deb 05 November 1974 vol 880 c134W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is his policy on the extent of the importation of steel to the United Kingdom from other countries as to quantity, increased home production and on reduction of imports.

Mr. Meacher

There are no quantitative restrictions on imports of steel and steel products into the United Kingdom.

The British Steel Corporation's development strategy envisages an increase of some 40 per cent. in the United Kingdom steelmaking capacity over the next decade so as to help meet home demand, thereby reducing the need for imports, and also to provide for substantial exports.
