HC Deb 05 November 1974 vol 880 cc93-4W
29. Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will take steps to assist employers, trade unions and the general public to identify which wage claims and settlements fall within the social contract.

Mr. Foot

As a general rule, I doubt whether it is helpful for the Government to pass judgment on all claims and settlements. But I will be discussing the relationship between particular settlements and the social contract, if I catch Mr. Speaker's eye in the debate later today.

30. Mr. Mather

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement about the working so far of the social contract.

Mr. Foot

As we have said on many occasions, the social contract is concerned with a wide range of economic and social measures. One of its important aspects is that it has made possibe a return to free collective bargaining and the establishment of the guidelines for negotiation prepared by the TUC.
