HC Deb 04 November 1974 vol 880 cc38-9W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what steps are taken by her Department in relation to consumer protection, so far as the interests of consumers in obtaining regular sugar supplies are concerned.

Mr. Alan Williams

We have urged retailers not to require old-age pensioners and regular customers known to them to buy other goods before supplying them with normal purchases of sugar. We have also suggested that shops relying on conditional sales to ensure a fair distribution of available supplies among other customers should exhibit a notice to this effect outside the shop so as to give such customers a chance to organise their shopping accordingly. The public can also help by not hoarding sugar.
