HC Deb 04 November 1974 vol 880 c63W
Mr. Bryant Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to meet the shortage of salt for sale in shops in the South-East of England; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Strang

There is no real shortage of salt. Ample supplies lie below the surface of our own country. Unfounded rumours of an impending shortage led to a panic demand which exhausted shop and distributive stocks throughout the United Kingdom. Packers have made every effort to meet the abnormal demand, but the situation will not improve so long as unnecessary panic buying continues.
