HC Deb 04 November 1974 vol 880 cc62-3W
Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, if he will review the ban on livestock exports from the United Kingdom and the increasing amount of imports, in view of the present state of the beef industry.

Mr. Strang

The present suspension of export licences is under review in the light of the Report of the O'Brien Committee on the Export of Animals for Slaughter. We are in touch with the European Community on those recommendations of the committee that affect the Community as a whole and a debate has been promised on the subject. Total imports of livestock and carcase meat in the beef, sheep and pigmeat sectors during the period January-August 1974 are down compared with the corresponding period in the last couple of years.
