HC Deb 24 May 1974 vol 874 c314W
Mr. MacGregor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the total net income in 1974–75 of a widow with two children under 11 years of age and a gross investment income of £3,000 per annum and of a divorced wife with two children under 11 years of age and a gross investment income of £2,000 per annum plus £1,000 maintenance payments, assuming the present Finance Bill provisions for both including the Chancellor's undertaking on the treatment of maintenance payments on the Second Reading of the Bill.

Dr. Gilbert

Assuming that the allowances due are the single person's allowance, child allowance and additional personal allowance the figures are:

Net income (£)
(a) (b)
Widow 2,182 2,812
Divorced wife 2,332 2,332

In column (a) it has been assumed that the widow is not in receipt of a widowed mother's allowance.

In column (b) it has been assumed that the widow is in receipt of a widowed mother's allowance but is not within the first 26 weeks of widowhood.

The figures take account of family allowance and clawback.
